Who are we?
First and foremost,
we’re two best friends who love Christ.
Currently, Preston, in addition
to his job at the Center for Campus Ministry at Maryville College,
is working with several ministries as a retreat leader, featured
Christian Speaker, and author. Tom, as many of you know, continues
to share is faith through music, youth ministry, and his career
as an ER nurse. From our separate lives of ministry, we feel
that God is calling us to share our faith with others, together,
through our friendship. The success of this combined ministry
has seemingly sprung up over night and the response has been
overwhelming! In the past few months, we have had a great time
meeting amazing kids and youth ministers, been invited to participate
in many conferences and retreats, and have even managed to squeeze
in some fun in the sun. We may not be sure where this ministry
will lead us, but we are confident that with our best friend
by our side and the Holy Spirit as our trail guide, we are in
for a great hike!
So,
what’s with the name?
We love the mountains. Hiking is a great
escape for those of us who feel like we spend our lives wandering.
In the mountains the destinations are clear, the paths are often
times clearly marked, and there are even clear rules and warnings
along the way, like "don't feed the bears" and "watch
for falling rocks". Everything you need for the journey
is on your back and reality is simple.
Although you can hike alone, it’s always more enjoyable
and safer to go with a friend.
If you read the Book of Acts, it seems like the last time anyone
got a clear and unmistakable view of Christ it was on a mountain
at His ascension into heaven. On the top of the Mount of Olives
the Apostles saw Jesus for the last time on Earth. On that mountain
top the veil between heaven and earth was thinned and angels
spoke unambiguously. And what did the angels say? Well, as the
apostles strained their necks and narrowed their eyes to the
sky, the angels, standing next to them on earth, said, "Men
of Galilee, why do you stand their looking at the sky?"
Just like that their eyes were snapped back to the reality of
the world. No more parables or great sermons directly from God’s
own mouth. Now it was up to them, and us, to discern God's will.
At this point the Apostles walked off the mountain to Jerusalem,
and, sometimes, I think it has been downhill for the rest of
us ever since. However, God didn’t leave us alone; we
have faith in the Holy Spirit and in each other. So there we
find ourselves on the mountain top, wandering and searching,
looking for clarity, listening for angels, and hiking for Jesus.

Final Name Suggestion :: |
CONGRATULATIONS
TO AMANDA FOR SELECTING OUR MINISTRY NAME! We still
don't know what you've won!
1. "Hiking for Jesus" is your ministry's
name. And here's why. . .you've already got it out
there--people are wearing HIKING FOR JESUS merchandise--but
there's more. The blog on Preston's myspace gives
the phrase new clarity. Together y'all wrote on the
flyer "finding Jesus among the clutter and the
chaos..." What do you do when you're hiking?!
You're connecting with beauty (which is God-created),
and escaping from the chaos of society. When I think
hiking, I think peace...but there's also hard work.
